Volkswagen wants to expand its electric lineups, so it’s only logical if they are planning on electrifying their upcoming 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. The company has a rather ambitious plan, wanting to be the biggest EV manufacturers in the world before 2025. That’s why they are focusing on the ID. Family with full electric power. Herbert Diess, the CEO of VW Group, they are planning on the latest addition of ID.8, which would be designed as a big SUV created as the flagship model for the brand’s electric versions.
About the Atlas
VW Atlas was first debuted in 2016. In 4 years after its launch, it got a facelifted project in 2020. The Atlas was designed as the biggest brand’s vehicle using MQB platform with total dimension of 198.3 inches of length, 77.9 inches of width, and 69.6 inches of height.
The ID.8 will take inspirations from the Atlas, having similar (exterior) dimensions. However, the ID.8 would offer more space in the cabin because it would be constructed with MEB electric architecture. The fact that this platform won’t be using internal combustion engine (upfront) can also help with the more space offer. This ID.8 would be able to accommodate 7 people comfortably, while the ID.6 X and ID.6 Crozz (which are aimed for Chinese market) already come with three row seating arrangement. VW plans on creating a more imposing look, considering that it’s the biggest SUV design with electric power.
Platform and Construction
Diess announced that the company has been seriously working on different platforms, including the PPE, MEB, MLB, and MQB. All of these platforms would be used to construct all models from VW Group. They are planning on consolidating within one super platform system to reduce production costs and overall manufacturing complexity. This plan has been included in their 800 million investment plan for their Wolfsburg (development) facility, in which the modules and platforms would be created and designed.
Powertrain and Performance
Atlas Cross Sport may likely be a part of the company’s next production plan related to 2024 Volkswagen Atlas, but they haven’t provided any information about it. For powertrain, since the ID.8 is using the same structure as the Atlas, it’s probably having the same system too. There would be a bigger battery pack (with 77 kW capacity) for farther distance. When combined with two electric motors, the possible power can reach 301 hp with all wheel driving system.
